Ten hard lessons learnt in startup land
BloomLab @ St Cat's, 2 Park Road CRAWLEY, WA 6009 (opposite UWA)
4:00 PM – 5:15 PM
Please note this workshop is on WEDNESDAY from 4-5pm (with no workshop on Thursday for this week only). Join us for invaluable insights from Charlie Gunningham, CEO at Business News! Charlie will share the ten most important lessons he has learnt through his vast experiences with startups. Originally from the UK, Charlie worked in Singapore for 8 years before landing in Perth in 1997. Graduating as top MBA student from UWA Business School in 1999, he cofounded aussiehome.com, an online real estate business, which he ran for 10 years until it was acquired by REIWA in 2010. He then ran reiwa.com before joining Business News in 2013. Charlie is a big supporter of the startup tech community in Perth, an adjunct lecturer in eBusiness at UWA Business School and also sits on the Board of Cancer Support WA! Here is what Charlie says about the workshop: -         You’ll need to come along to find out what the 10 are! -         But believe me, they were hard won, and have not been lost on me. -         I see so many startups these days, making some of the same mistakes I made. -         Mistakes are fine, as long as you learn from them, don’t repeat them, and don’t kill your business. -         Many are avoidable; business is risky enough (especially start-ups) without making avoidable mistakes -         Come along, you’ll enjoy my stories; and you’ll certainly enjoy all the mistakes I made! -         But despite that, I had a 10-year journey with my own dotcom, we had lots of laughs, and even made some money. No experience, startup ideas, memberships or fees required! Capacity is limited, so get in quick!  This free event is part of our "Skills that uni won't teach you" workshop series that will be running every academic week of the semester (usually on Thursdays) at 4pm in the BloomLab at St Cat's. With over 30 FREE workshops hosted by some very awesome industry speakers, we've got a super busy semester!

Accounting 101: Things every entrepreneur should know to get money and manage it.

4:00 PM – 5:15 PM
Accounting!!  Eleven letters that make a lot of people and small businesses scurry away or cover their eyes and groan.  We usually associate it with lots of receipts, stacks and paper work we leave behind until the end of the financial year and tax time and we definitely tend to link it with the word "expensive!"  Expensive to get an accountant to fix our finances and lodge our taxes, a book keeper to get us up to scratch with our record keeping and reports and possibly a financial planner to help us get on track with knowing how much our product/service costs, what price we should charge and what our cash flow is to survive, grow and expand!  Well accounting is not scary, according to Nathan Kerr, founder of online accounting service Dukbill and national award winning business development manager.  In one hour, Nathan is going to show you how to get your accounting simpler, faster and better from the very beginning, generate a positive cashflow, keep you and your business out of the red and ways to look at funding for your entrepreneurial ideas.  No experience, startup ideas, memberships or fees required! Capacity is limited, so get in quick!  This free event is part of our "Skills that uni won't teach you" workshop series that will be running every academic week of the semester at Thursday 4pm in the BloomLab at St Cat's.
